Question: How was it possible that AOL and Microsoft are succeeding in thier 'control' of the Web by being an "automatic choice" for software used online?

Hypothesis: There are a good number of companies who embark in the business of making software for online use, but it is seldom that they succeed because risks are high and competition is tough, plus, people have already been used to using those "automatic choice" software.

Question: Now, with the fact that AOL and Microsoft are already almost 'controlling' the net, will it still be possible that new software companies with good products will be able to come up to the level of AOL and Microsoft as 'net controllers' and how?(will they just be locked up?)?
